Extended family sessions are always such a sweet mix of connection and chaos in the best way. This one at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens was no exception. We had a mom and dad, their two little girls, grandparents, and an aunt — lots of love, lots of laughter, and plenty of moments worth remembering.
The plan was to photograph outdoors, but Alabama weather had other ideas. Right as we arrived, the rain started coming down, so we made a quick pivot and headed into the greenhouse. Honestly? It couldn’t have worked out better. The greenhouse at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens has the most beautiful, soft natural light, and it gave us a warm, bright space without worrying about anyone getting soaked. Plus, the greenery made everything feel cozy and timeless.
We made sure to get a variety of groupings so everyone walked away with meaningful images. We started with photos of the entire extended family together — grandparents with their kids and grandkids all in one frame. Those are the images that tend to become favorites over the years. Then we focused on the immediate family of four, capturing sweet moments between mom and dad with their girls. Of course, we also made time for just the two little girls together, letting them be themselves and interact naturally. Those sibling moments are always some of my favorites.
Sessions like this are such a reminder of how important it is to document family as it grows and changes. Extended family photos don’t happen often, but when they do, they tell a bigger story — one that includes generations, relationships, and the season of life you’re in right now.
If you’re considering an extended family session at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, know that even unexpected rain can turn into something really beautiful. Sometimes the backup plan ends up being the perfect plan.
