Fall Edition 2025

Fall is one of the most popular (and honestly, one of the best) times of year for family photos. The colors are beautiful the air is crisp, and the golden hour light just hits different. If you’re planning a session this fall, let’s talk about what to wear- because picking outfits for the whole family can feel like a full time job, right?
Here are a few tips to help you pull it all together stress free and camera ready!
Start With a Color Palette
Think warm, earthy tones that complement the season:
-Mustard, rust, olive, cream, navy, camel and burgundy are all perfect choices.
-Choose 2-3 main colors and sprinkle them throughout everyones outfits.
-Avoid anything too neon or super bright- it can take away from the natural feel of the session.

Mix Textures, Not Patterns
Textures like knits, linen, corduroy, and denim add depth without being too busy.
A chunky sweater on mom, soft flannel on dad, and a corduroy jumper for a little one? Yes, please!
Avoid everyone in heavy prints-maybe one person in a subtle floral or plaid, then ground it with solid colors on everyone else.

Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in the same color shirt. Instead, choose outfits that feel like they go together. For example, mom in a flowy rust dress, dad in a soft gray henley with dark jeans, one kid in a cream sweater and boots, and another in a muted plaid button-down.

Keep Comfort in Mind
Kids are happiest when they feel good in their clothes- so skip anything itchy, stiff or too tight. If someone’s uncomfortable, it’s going to show in the photos.

Think About Movement
Long dresses or skirts with a little flow can add some dreamy movement to your images, especially with fall breezes. Layer like cardigans or shawls can also breathe fun variety and can easily be removed for a different look mid-session.

Avoid Neons and Logos
Neon colors can cast strange tones on skin and draw attention away from faces, and logos can be distracting in photos. Stick to soft, timeless tones and skip any big branding.
Add Personality with Accessories
Don’t be afraid to bring in hats, scarves, boots, or jewelry to make the outfits feel more like you. Just keep accessories minimal enough not to distract from your faces.

Pro Tip: Ditch the Smartwatch
As much as we all love our Apple Watches (and closing those rings!), they tend to stand out in photos. Consider leaving yours at home, or tucking it away in your bag. A bare wrist looks much more classic and distraction free in those close up family shots.
