Getting ready for your senior photos is one of the most fun parts of the experience. As a Birmingham, Alabama senior photographer, I always tell my clients that what you wear plays a big role in how your final images look and feel. The goal is simple: choose outfits that photograph beautifully, feel comfortable, and truly reflect who you are right now.

This senior style guide will help you feel confident and prepared for your Birmingham senior photo session.

How Many Outfits Should You Bring?

I always recommend bringing two to three outfit choices to your senior photos.

A perfect lineup looks like this:

  • One dressy outfit
  • One casual outfit
  • One meaningful outfit

That gives us variety while still keeping your session relaxed and easy.

What to Wear for Senior Photos – Girls

For girls’ senior photos, dresses photograph beautifully! Especially flowy or softly structured styles. A dress is a great option for your dressier look, but a romper, skirt and top, or wide-leg pants can also work really well.

For your casual outfit, think jeans and a soft top, a lightweight sweater, or a simple layered look. This is usually the outfit that feels most like “you,” and it often becomes a favorite set from the session.

For your third outfit, I love when girls bring something meaningful—like a college t-shirt, a school shirt, or even a jersey if you were involved in sports or activities. These images are such a sweet way to remember this season of life.

What to Wear for Senior Photos – Guys

For guys’ senior photos, a clean and classic look always works well on camera. A button-down shirt, polo, or sweater paired with nice jeans or chinos is perfect for your dressy outfit. Some guys even bring a jacket or full suit for a more polished look.

For your casual outfit, jeans with a t-shirt, henley, or hoodie layered with a jacket feels natural and relaxed.

For the third option, I love when guys bring a college t-shirt, team shirt, letterman jacket, or something that represents what mattered most during high school.

Colors, Patterns, and Textures That Photograph Best

Soft neutral colors photograph incredibly well for senior pictures. Cream, beige, soft gray, light denim, and soft pastels are always a safe and flattering choice.

That said, a bright splash of color can be really fun for a pop of personality. If you choose a pattern, go with a smaller print rather than a large, bold pattern.

Textures add so much depth to your senior photos. Think chunky sweaters, ruffled tops, accordion skirts, flowy fabrics, or soft knits. These little details create movement and interest without being distracting.

Accessories

Accessories add another layer and dimension to your photos. Jewelry, scarves, bracelets, fun shoes, a purse or bag, or even a wrap or coat (depending on the season) can really complete an outfit and elevate your overall look.

Props That Tell Your Story

If you have something that represents your high school years, bring it. Musical instruments, footballs, pom-poms, skateboards, and other meaningful items are always welcome in my senior photo sessions. They help tell your story in a very personal way.

Be True To Yourself

The most important style tip I can give for your senior photos is this: be yourself!

Now for the fun part- don’t overthink it. Skip the drastic haircut, don’t buy something totally out of character, and choose outfits that feel like you. Your senior photos should look and feel like this exact season of your life. When you are comfortable and confident it will show it every image!

So grab your outfits, throw them in a bag and let’s go make some really fun senior pictures. I can’t wait to photograph you and celebrate this season with you!
