Welcoming a new baby is one of the most special (and sometimes chaotic!) seasons of life. Those early days are filled with sleepy snuggles, lots of adjusting, and moments you never want to forget. That’s why I love in-home newborn sessions- they allow you to slow down and document your family just as you are, in the space that means the most to you.
Recently I photographed a beautiful Birmingham family with 2 little girls: a 2 week old baby and her 2 year old big sister. Their home was filled with soft, natural light-the kind of light that makes everything feel peaceful and dreamy. We kept the session simple, letting the moments unfold naturally. Some of my favorite images are of mom and dad snuggled on the couch with both girls, and big sister proudly checking in on “her baby.”
You may be wondering what to expect during your in-home newborn session, so here’s a little breakdown:

1. I come to you
No need to pack up the baby, the diaper bag, or your toddler’s entire toy collection. I’ll come to your home, which means you can stay in your space and everyone feels more relaxed. Plus, the photos will feel personal and meaningful because they’re taken in your everyday environment.

2. We follow the baby’s (and toddler’s) lead
In-home newborn sessions typically last around an hour, which gives us plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes, or snack breaks for big siblings. We will go at a calm, gentle pace to keep everyone happy.

3. You don’t need a spotless house
I promise- your home doesn’t need to be perfect. We’ll shoot in the rooms with the best natural light (usually the nursery, Master bedroom, or living room), and I’ll gently move anything that doesn’t need to be in the shot. It’s all about creating a cozy, authentic vibe.

4. Simple, natural posing
No stiff posing or studio setups here. I’ll give light direction to help you feel comfortable, but I also love capturing those quiet in-between moments. Like big sister gently patting the baby, or mom rocking the newborn while dad makes the toddler laugh in the background.

5. What to wear? Keep it soft and simple
I recommend neutral tones, soft textures, and outfits you fel good in. Bare feet, soft swaddles, and simple pieces photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection as a family.
