Cake Smash Session in Birmingham, Alabama

Family

There’s nothing quite like photographing a baby’s first birthday. That tiny newborn is suddenly a full-blown toddler, and this session was one of my favorite examples of that magic — a joyful, frosting-covered cake smash right here in Birmingham, Alabama.

Why I Love Cake Smash Sessions

Cake smash sessions are one of the most fun parts of my work as a Birmingham family photographer. Usually babies are a little unsure with their first birthday cake. Typically the cake eating starts with a tiny poke that quickly turns into shoving it in their face. Always such fun entertainment! Those in-between expressions are what make a gallery feel like a genuine record of who your baby was at exactly one year old.

Making It a Family Affair

My favorite part of this session was slowing down to capture the whole family together, not just the birthday boy, We also carved out time for sweet photos with his two-year-old big sister. Sibling portraits at this age are pure gold, capturing a relationship that’s only going to keep evolving.
